COURSE OVERVIEW
The Young Actors’ Summer School gives young people the opportunity to experience learning with a leading British drama school. While the course illuminates the distinction between drama as it is taught at school and a vocational training, we do not offer teaching which advises explicitly on audition technique for drama school entry.
These courses are aimed at anyone between the ages of 16 to18 who is may be thinking of applying to drama school, or who has an interest in theatre and would like to explore the craft further.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
16-18 (students must be aged 16 at the start of the course).
Applicants are not asked to audition, but each applicant needs to complete the questionnaire on the application form, giving information about his or her experience (or otherwise) of acting. Fluent, confident knowledge of the English language is essential.
COURSE DETAILS
Tutors are drawn from the Academy's senior staff and distinguished directors from the profession.
- EXPLORING SHAKESPEARE: 24 – 28 JULY 2018 SOLD OUT
Are you mystified and frustrated by Shakespeare, maybe feeling that you just don’t 'get it'? We address this problem by regarding Shakespeare as a living playwright and encourage students to get inside the real lives of his characters. You will enjoy standing up and speaking his words out loud, enabling that great writing to come naturally and simply alive. During the week you will work on Scenes, Monologues and Sonnets as well as Voice, Movement and Stage Fighting.
- STAGECRAFT: 24 – 28 JULY 2018 OR 30 JULY - 3 AUGUST 2018
How do you move effectively on stage? How do you make yourself heard there? What’s the best way to learn lines? Is there a “best method” of acting: a right way or a wrong way? Where does confidence come from? If these questions engage you, why not take this opportunity to examine some answers and learn alongside RADA’s expert faculty? You will work on voice, text and physical performance.
- CONTEMPORARY TEXT: 30 JULY – 3 AUGUST 2018
How is the world around us reflected in contemporary writing for the theatre? While the lives of others, and their imaginative representation, is an important part of this course, you will also be encouraged to bring your own experience to the workshops, in order to explore the society in which we live. Scenes are selected from suitable plays written for young actors. In addition to Scene Study classes, you will work with the Academy's staff on Voice, Acting and Movement.
- DEVISING THEATRE: 30 JULY – 3 AUGUST 2018
Collaboration is an essential element of theatre practice; and on this course you will learn how to work together effortlessly and efficiently. Under the guidance of a skilled practitioner, participants will determine a theme at the start of the week, and then develop a unique piece of theatre. In addition, there will be classes in Movement, Voice and Improvisation. NB: This course prepares students for the demands of AS and A-level, both of which have a strong collaborative element.
HOURS OF WORK
Classes generally take place between 10:00am and 6:00pm. Classes are not optional and a certificate stating the minimum number of contact hours is awarded on successful completion of each course.
The course is not a casual undertaking: complete and consistent commitment to punctuality, discipline and preparation is required from every student.
WHAT TO BRING
Further details will be sent once you have been accepted onto the course/courses.
It is important to note that the Academy does not accept responsibility for students beyond the scheduled teaching hours on the RADA premises. Parents and guardians are therefore advised to ensure that adequate supervision of activities undertaken in the evenings and at weekends is provided, as appropriate, for the duration of the course.
